Tredwells | Feb 14th Is Approaching; This May Be The Place

My, my, my. Let me just start by saying that Tredwells is an absolutely fantastic restaurant and the booking process was so smooth. I know a great menu when I see one. To receive such good feedback from the people I booked on behalf of was very warming because it meant that I made a good choice. I'm all about people enjoying their food!


Now that I've set your expectations, let me proceed with the review.


Music Bread


I was really intrigued by some of the items on the menu. Particularly the interestingly named 'Music Bread'. I had no idea what to expect, but when it came to the table I wasn't sure how to feel. The music bread was paper thin, crispy bread that appeared to have been splattered with balsamic and olive oil. It was an underwhelming sight. I've done some research and actually, music bread or 'pane guttiau' / 'carta di musica' is actually a Sardinian staple and is traditionally cooked to be so thin that a sheet of music can be read through it. Had I known it had some history to it, I would have been more forgiving.

Despite my initial disappointment, I thoroughly enjoyed the music bread and found myself asking for the remaining sheets to be passed down to me from the other side of the table. The merging of the olive oil and the balsamic resulted in a sweet yet tart taste and the stickiness of the union quickly became addictive. It was the perfect entry to a great meal. Light, yet made enough of an impression to generate excitement.


Scallops, Roasted Cauliflower and Gordal Olives


Would you believe me if I told you during this meal, I ate scallops for the first time ever? I know, I can't believe it myself.

The scallops were so delicate. I really could have just used my fork to slice them. Although not bursting with flavour, the scallops had such an interesting look and texture, that actually most of my senses were satisfied. On top of that, the presentation was fantastic. The cauliflower had a smokey taste and worked well with the rest of the meal.


Triple Cooked Chips


A waitress recommended these to me, and I am so glad I listened to her. These golden brown planks of potato were the perfect side dish. The thin exterior was crisp and the inside was a filling with a texture very similar to mashed potato. This is a good thing; it means that the cooking process is working well. Really, chips shouldn't be any harder than this on this inside.

Chickpea Pancake, Seasonal Vegetables and Sambal (plant-based)


Chickpea pancakes - I cook these at home all the time. They are quick to prepare and quick to cook. This chickpea pancake tasted just like the ones I make at home; they were even the same thickness.


I apologise - I can't really say what vegetables were on top of the pancake (I don't remember) but I do remember that the sauces that were smeared on top of everything stood out much more than everything else.

The pancake was doused in a thick sauce that hid almost everything it touched and dollops of sambal were dotted around too. Although the flavours worked very well together, I think the dish relied way too much on the lighter coloured sauce for taste. I think a lighter helping of this would have been better, although because chickpea pancakes are not always the most moist, I can see why there was so much of it.


Presentation wise, it was not the most visually appealing, but it had a messy charm to it.

To end, I had this lush dessert! Where do I start?


So, the cake itself was a real treat. I love ginger cake - it is usually sticky, sweet and a tiny bit spicy. This cake was no different. I didn't actually eat the dehydrated pear slice that rested on top of the cake, because I don't like pears.


I didn't take a minute to explore the rosemary caramel in isolation, but it worked really well with the cake. I did not enjoy the foamy 'cream cheese' topping - the flavour was not to my taste.

So why do I think that Tredwells is a great date location? Let me give you five reasons.


1. The menu is full of conversation starters.

2. The staff are very attentive so that you can focus on eating your meal and laughing together.

3. The environment is very relaxed.

4. There is something on the menu for any kind of eater.

5. It is in Central London, so you won't be far from your next spot, wherever you decide to go.
