If you haven't been to Sweet Chick, then what are you doing?
I visited this restaurant for the second time recently with the same group of friends as I did last time. Normally, I would protest against this, as having a regular food spot isn't something I'm trying to do, but the food is good at Sweet Chick, so I was more than happy to travel down and try it again.
Vegan Chicken, Classic Belgian Waffles and a Crawfish Hush Puppy
Firstly, let me just say that I don't know if the waffles are vegan, so if you are concerned about the presence of any ingredients you cannot eat, please make sure that you check with the staff!
Seitan is becoming a household name, at this point. It is actually everywhere. I believe that is what the vegan chicken was made of.
The coating of the chicken substitute lacked nothing. It was very well seasoned and was perfectly crisp. The substitute itself had a good texture. It wasn't really chicken-like but the flavour was very meat-like. It had that typical seitan stringiness as well. With the syrup, the 'chicken' quickly became a bit sickly. I can't blame Sweet Chick for this, as I decided how much syrup would be going on my meal. However, I thought it would be fair for me to state this observation, so that if any readers are a bit sensitive to certain flavours, they know how to manage this. The 'chicken' went very well with the soft, bouncy waffles. The waffles were dusted with sugar but not so much that my teeth felt like they were on their way out. I couldn't fault the presentation. It was all very neatly arranged!
The hushpuppy, although tasty, was not the most memorable thing I ate here. It did go very well with the dips that were on the table, however. The Jalapeño Jam and the Hush Puppy went very well together; I experienced a pleasant kick.
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy (see photo above)
I'm going to keep this short and sweet. Yes, I review food but I'm still learning how to review things that typically tend to taste very similar wherever you go, if not the same.
There was no over-whipping here. The mashed potato didn't drip from my fork, nor did it stick to it for dear life. It had the perfect consistency. A canyon to contain the gravy had been formed in the middle of the mashed potato serving. This made for easy mixing. I enjoyed this gravy. It had depth and there were no nasty, lumpy surprises.
I didn't fall in love with this dish, but it was a tasty dessert! It did make me feel like I was really dining in a restaurant in the Deep South, though. I believe I could taste nutmeg. I like.
The pumpkin filling was smooth, creamy and full of flavour. It had a lot of body to it. The pastry crumbled more in the mouth than when cut into and that is how I love it. There was plenty of cream on top, but had I been the one putting it all together, I would have put a lot less on top of it. I was able to scrap most of it off - I shouldn't be eating dairy anyway but you know how it gets.
I know what you want to ask; did I prefer my first or second visit to Sweet Chick?
I preferred my first visit. Based on what I ordered the second time around, I would have thought that that wouldn't have been the case. However, I think that the variety of the food presented to me, the feeling of experiencing something new and the special little touches made the first time round made it a more memorable visit. That is not to say that the second visit was awful - not at all! The service was still excellent and the food was well cooked. I still recommend Sweet Chick!
